The heavy Colt in his hand wavered.

The girl screamed a warning to the newcomer, and pointed at Pike. Pike saw the man whirl and draw his sixgun in one practiced, fluid motion. On shit, he thought. I bought it this time!

The gun in the newcomer's hand spat fire. Before Pike could bring up his own gun, he felt something heavy, like a fist, strike him just above his sagging belt buckle, knocking him back and to the ground. He had already cocked the Walker and it exploded as his elbow struck the floor of the barn.

He saw the deputy leap forward then and fling his manacles over the head of the gunslick, dragging him back violently. The sixgun dropped from the fellow's hand. The deputy flung the newcomer from him and snatched up his gun. Pike smiled, leaned back, and closed his eyes.

It was going to be all right. All right...

Longarm hesitated momentarily. He had seen where the bullet had taken the old prospector, and wanted to go to his side. Then he heard Snefflin scrambling through the hay and slamming out through the barn's side door. A second later came the dim thunder of hooves as Snefflin fled.

Longarm hurried to the prospector's side. The man's eyes were closed, but he was smiling.

Longarm turned his attention back to Tracy. "Get me the keys to these chains and unlock me. Now!"

Tracy scrambled to her feet and disappeared inside the grain room. Longarm looked back at the prospector. His eyes had opened. Longarm put his arm under the old man's head and lifted it.

"How you feeling, Pike?"

"I got a bad hit down there, I'm thinking. Feels like some-thin' mighty heavy's growin' in there."

"You're gutshot, Pike. I'm sorry. You shouldn't have dealt in on this hand. You didn't owe me anything."

"It's dry out there and it looked cool in here. Besides," the man said weakly, managing a faint, lascivious grin, "I done seen me a naked woman. Maybe that was worth it."

"She's a whore, Pike."

"She's a woman too."
